Viñedos Hontza
Iker García & Alice Bridoux
A special find in the village of Labraza, the Basque region of Rioja Alavesa, Viñedos
Hontza is an exciting project from local Iker Garcìa and his Belgian partner Alice
Bridoux. They founded the estate in 2015 with an immediate dedication to
BIODYNAMIC and natural winemaking principles. By harnessing the unique land on
which they grow their vines, Iker and Alice create a range of wines from fun and
approachable to serious single-vineyard explorations of terroir.
HONTZA – “OWL” in Basque – is the symbol of our family winery, a homage to the native guardians of our vineyards, the owls living in the autochthonous pine forest surrounding our land.
Viñedos Hontza is dedicated to making handmade natural wine on a human scale. We are the first and only winery in Labraza, a small medieval hamlet nestled in the foothills of eastern Rioja Alavesa (Basque Country) at 650 m above sea level. Our grapes grow in a unique microclimate, in a landscape of uncommon biodiversity.
Our project is founded on a deep respect for the land on which it was born, deeply rooted in the history – both natural and human – that is its inheritance. Rather than adopting the efficient modern production techniques that threaten the natural balance of our region and the world at large, our aim is to craft unique wines that humbly express the true terroir from which they come.
